Professor Emeritus of Industrial & Systems Engineering, Virginia Tech. Past Member, United States Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board (NWTRB). Nominated by the National Academy of Sciences and appointed to two terms on the NWTRB first by President Reagan, and second by President H.W.Bush. At Va. Tech I was Director of the Human Engineering Center and Director of the Safety Engineering Laboratory. For the National Academy of Sciences for many years I chaired the Transportation Research Board Committee on the Transportation of Hazardous Materials, was a member of the Task Force on the Demilitarization of Chemical Weapons, and briefly chaired the Task Force on Pipeline Safety. I have worked on the design of some of the nation's most critical programs, including the Sprint Missile System, the first aircraft-mounted laser target designator, the first fighter aircraft heads-up display (F-111), and the Minuteman Missile System. My specialization is the safety engineering of complex systems. I am the recipient of several national professional awards. I have authored many technical articles, six book chapters, and three books. I am an ordained Baptist clergyman.
